Divali is a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus. It honors Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, and the homecoming of Price Ram as told in the Hindu epic "Ramayana." Gita, a young girl far from her home in India, is celebrating her first Divali in America. Disappointed by the cold, rainy weather and her friends inability to attend her Divali celebration, her parents help her learn the true meaning of this holiday.
Recently immigrated from India, Gita is looking forward to celebrating her favorite holiday, Divali, a festival of lights, but things are so different in her new home that she wonders if she will ever adjust.
Gita has recently moved to America from India, and she is looking forward to celebrating Divali--her favorite holiday--with her family. She has invited some of her new friends from school to join in the festivities, but a winter storm puts a damper on her plans. Just as Gita decides she hates her new home, events take another turn.

"Readers will easily identify with the desire to follow old traditions in a new setting and the disappointment when weather threatens a celebration. Artist Alice Priestley successfully renders the blending of the two cultures. She has a good eye for detail in the mother's Indian dress, as well as the architecture of the new city. The result is a handsome series of warm and engaging illustrations."
