French pop singer Yves Montand was, along with Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevaliar, and Jacques Brel, one of the most beloved pop singers in France throughout the 1940s, `50s, and beyond. A PARIS 1948-49 captures Montand in the bloom of his early career, performing such classics as "Clopin-Clopan," "C'est Si Bon," and "Clementine," all with the poignant, bittersweet charm that was his trademark. Lovers of classic French singers will want to snatch this up, as it is a fine sampler not only of Montand's early sound, but of a vintage era of French pop as well.

Belinda Carlisle has followed an interesting trajectory over the years, from youthful garage punk to new wave-pop diva (fronting the Go-Gos) to adult contemporary solo artist. Given her many phases, it shouldn't be too much of a curveball to learn that VOILA, Carlisle's first solo album in 10 years, is an homage to the French chanson tradition. Yet it's somehow odd to hear Carlisle singing entirely in French, and taking on the songs of Edith Piaf, Francoise Hardy, and Serge Gainsbourg.
But Carlisle pulls the project off with panache: VOILA is executed with sophistication and skill. The excellent selection of material is the bedrock of the album (Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas," for example, is a highlight), but the genre-splicing arrangements, and guests like Brian Eno and Hothouse Flowers, keep things fresh. Still, it's Carlisle's show, and her interpretations of these French classics make this unique album a worthy listen.
Canadian Dion's first language was French, so it probably shouldn't have come as a surprise to anybody that she'd do an album in her native tongue, specifically a collaboration with Luc Plamondon, accurately described here as one of Canada's premier French language pop lyricists. Musically, it's pretty much business as usual, i.e. a mix of lovely pop ballads big production flourishes, soaring chord changes, and stadium-ready guitar parts. Some of the songs, particularly, the opening "Des Mots Qui Sonnent" rock quite a bit harder than one might have suspected; think a Gallic version of Foreigner. Best song: the romantic "Une Garcon Comme Les Autres (Ziggy)," which is not, alas, a French tribute to David Bowie's immortal spaceman.
